2006 SEMA Show Brief
The
Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show
happens every fall in Las Vegas. Show attendees must be
associated with either the automotive industry, vehicle
manufacturers, aftermarket parts and accessory producers,
distributors, retailers or the automotive press.
One
can usually tell what is going to be a hot item by the
amount of these professionals gathered around a display and
the amount of time they spend there. Of course, the
conversation about the item is, also, a good indicator.
SEMA
has always been a place where concept cars slated for
production are shown by their manufacturers and 2006 was no
different.
Before
going to the GM display, we wandered over to the booth where
the other "pony car" concept, the Dodge Challenger, was on
display. Expectedly there was a smaller crowd around this
car and the group's general impression seemed to be: "hot
but too retro".
Then
we then headed to the GM area.
The
2010 Camaro was in the middle of GM's large display. This
time, we got to see the "red car", the second of the two
2010
Concepts GM Design Staff built. It was surrounded by the
vehicles from GM's "American Muscle" collection which
included the Orange County Choppers Silverado 427, Dale
Earnhardt Jr.'s "Big Bad Silverado" along with Reggie
Jackson's 641-horsepower, 454-cubic inch 1969 Camaro.
We'd
seen the Silver Camaro Concept many times before, but this
red one was a stunner. There was a very large crowd around
it. Listening to the conversation among these automotive
professionals, we heard phrases like, "Wow...look at that!"
"Gee,
that brings back memories."
"I can't wait."
"I want one!"
All
seemed to agree that the 2010 Camaro is one fine looking car.
The inevitable question came from a person in this crowd,
"Why do we have to wait so long" The response from GM
representative on hand was, "We want to do it right".
After
looking at this very, very red Camaro, we'd say they are
right on track!
